Pycelle (Julian Glover) professes virtue to everyone, only to act against his own words privately, from employing prostitutes to persuading the Mad King to allow tragedy to be invited to the capital. Pycelle is a hypocrite of the highest degree. Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa) is a violent warlord who uses way too many livestock metaphors to describe other people.

He takes a terrified teen bride into a highly transactional marriage. Dany later describes this as rape, despite having eventually caught Stockholm-syndrome feelings for Khal Meathead. Also: Do you really need a wife to explain to you why mass rape is bad? Do better, man.

Their master plan: Kidnap Daenerys and her dragons and keep them prisoner forever.
At first glance it might not sound terribly evil, but these guys are willing to keep a woman locked in a dungeon forever, just to amplify their own power.
Castle Black master at arms Ser Alliser Thorne just starts out as a jerk, giving Jon Snow a hard time over his parentage and bullying new recruits like Samwell Tarly.

He ultimately takes a dark turn by leading a mutiny against Jon after the younger man is elected Lord Commander. You can almost forgive Mirri Maz Duur (Mia Soteriou) for using blood magic to kill Khal Drogo after she was kidnapped and raped by the Dothraki.

But the woman takes things too far when she extends her wrath to Daenerys’ unborn child. Lysa (Kate Dickie) poisons her own husband and tries to kill Sansa out of jealousy. It may be hard to blame her, though, given the manipulation he put her through. Selyse (Tara Fitzgerald) lets Stannis burn their only living child in a sacrifice to the Lord of Light.

Overcome with guilt, she ultimately hangs herself in the woods, but not before letting Melisandre barbecue her daughter. The High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce) was famously evil to the most evil characters in the Seven Kingdoms. But any leader, religious or otherwise, who supports torture and public humiliation is at least a little bit evil himself.

Ellaria Sand (Indira Varma) is the kind of character who would be terrifying in real life as well as in the context of the show.
She’s a little too fond of poison and famously uses it on Cersei and Jaime’s love child, Myrcella Baratheon.
The Waif (Faye Marsay) loves inflicting pain, and even made a bargain with Jaqen H’ghar that she could kill Arya for failing to carry out the hits called in the name of the Many-Faced God.

Craster (Robert Pugh) takes his daughters as wives, only to create more daughters to marry. What of his sons? Sacrificed to White Walkers, proving this man is one of the absolute worst of the Wildlings. A man obsessed with his own ambitions, he lets his son Theon be captured twice – by the Starks and the Boltons – and be mutilated by Ramsay rather than move his troops.

Upon receiving Theon’s severed penis, Balon writes him off as useless. It should come as no surprise that a hunter in the employ of Roose Bolton is a bad guy. Locke chops off Jaime Lannister’s hand, forces Brienne of Tarth to fight a bear for entertainment and loves torturing those who cross him. Kraznys mo Nakloz (Dan Hildebrand) may not be one of the show’s most infamous villains, but this slave trader’s penchant for torturing and killing – including slicing off a man’s nipple – earns him a spot on our list.

There are so many things you could say about Styr (Yuri Kolokolnikov) but chances are you won’t come up with anything worse than the fact that he eats Olly’s parents. Theon (Alfie Allen) has done some terrible things, including betraying the people who raised him.

But he eventually makes good with his adoptive family, even giving his life to protect Bran from the Night King. “Mad King” Aerys Targaryen (David Rintoul) killed and tortured as he descended into insanity. That said, his failing mental state leaves questions about how much he knew right from wrong. Like many of the worst on Game of Thrones, Euron’s (Pilou Asbæk) horrible acts come from a thirst for power.

He murders his own brother for the Salt Throne and has Balon’s children hunted down. He’s a pirate to his core, but cold and calculating in every move he makes. He also kills Rhaegal, and we’re still mad. Sorceress Melisandre (Carice van Houten) has no qualms about creating killer shadow demons and urging men to burn daughters at the stake.

Then again, she resurrects Jon Snow, proving there’s more to her than just evil, and she eventually kills herself so that Davos Seaworth doesn’t have to bother.
Myranda (Charlotte Hope) can be as depraved as lover Ramsay Bolton.
However, much of what she does – including having a woman mauled to death by dogs – is done out of a twisted loyalty, whether it’s returned it or not.

Though the show has been largely mysterious about how Faceless Man technology works, this introduction of masks in a bag forces us to take ask some tougher questions.

Before Walder, the furthest we’d seen a disguise differ from the wearer is when Jaqen (or was it Jaqen?) appeared to Arya as a black man.

But with Walder, we saw Arya do a full-body transformation. When she rips off her mask, Lord Walder’s clothes hang loosely on her. In the show’s depiction of the Faceless Men, anyone could be Arya. More on that in a bit. But how does it all work? According to the books, though the masks hanging in the Hall of Faces are part of how the Faceless Men disguise themselves, there is much more alchemy and blood magic involved.

The first time Arya has one of the faces applied to her in A Dance with Dragons, the man training her explains how it works: Mummers change their faces with artifice and sorcerers use glamors, these arts you shall learn, but what we do here goes deeper. Wise men can see through artifice, and glamors dissolve before sharp eyes, but the face you are about to don will be as true and solid as that face you were born with.

The disguise is applied using the blood, drawn in tribute, running down Arya’s own cut face. George R.R. Martin describes the process of pulling one of the dried-out human masks onto Arya’s head: “The leather scraped across her brow, dry and stiff, but as her blood soaked into it, it softened and turned supple.

Her cheeks grew warm, flushed.” Arya then starts to panic as she revisits some of the trauma of the dead girl whose face she is now wearing. The process is not always that intense. In the books as well as on the show, Jaqen H’ghar changes his look by simply waving his hand in front of his face. Obviously, in the show, Arya Stark is not cutting up her own face every time she puts on a new face.

For a series so often preoccupied with the rules of magic (see: warging, greenseeing, White Walkers, wights, dragonglass, etc.), this is a process that seems to require the most suspension of disbelief. In the bag Sansa finds, we only see faces, but there definitely appears to be some wig work involved with Arya’s transformation as well.

The question of how Arya not only baked two Freys into a pie last season, but also stripped Walder of his face and disposed of the body without being noticed this season, will likely always remain a mystery—one that doesn’t take away from the emotional satisfaction of seeing Arya take revenge for her family.

But was introducing literal faces in a bag too much information for a magic trick the show wishes to keep rather flexible? As Arya coolly mentions in this scene with Sansa, the Game of Faces taught her to be a good actress and an even better liar. These qualities were both baked into her character and beaten into her last season.

So when we see any Faceless assassinations from Arya in the future, she’ll likely be as committed to her character as she was playing Lord Walder.
That being said, it might be nice to see a little bit of extra comedy in the performance, should a disguised Arya find herself in a situation that’s more difficult to bluff her way through.

Unlike the real Faceless Men, Arya isn’t “No One.” Her personality (and personal vengeances) will always come shining through, even as she continues to use the tools of the assassin’s guild she flunked out of. Think of the joy in the last two Harry Potter movies, watching Helena Bonham Carter play Hermione Granger playing Bellatrix Lestrange.

Game of Thrones will never be a screwball comedy (nor should it be), but some light Polyjuice antics might provide a nice respite from all the murder.
But light antics should be the emphasis here—because if Game of Thrones leans too heavily on the Faceless Man bit (and there’s no reason to suspect it will), then the already-complicated series could get a little too messy.

I love the way the trick was executed this season. We knew from the very beginning of the scene that it was probably Arya in disguise as the late Walder Frey. The lack of any bait-and-switch didn’t take away from all the emotional highs of the scene. But if characters are forever ripping off masks to reveal— surprise —Arya Stark underneath, then Thrones will run the risk of straying into Mission Impossible II territory.

The takeaway lesson from the weakest installment in that hugely successful franchise: a little mask work goes a long way.
Unfortunately, the mystical arts of the Faceless Men have already had a detrimental effect on legions of Game of Thrones theorists.
The crackpot explanations for fairly basic (and occasionally flawed) plot twists were off the charts last season thanks, in large part, to the notion that in Braavos at least, anyone could be someone else at any given time.

There’s still a group of who believe Arya Stark died last season and the woman clashing with Sansa here is the Waif wearing Arya’s face. Some also erroneously believed that Arya was down in King’s Landing wearing this face when she was actually riding home to Winterfell.

One rule we do know about the Faceless technology is that someone has to be dead before you can slap their face on.
So that should, in theory, limit some of the crackpot theorizing.
But now that a face we recognize has been used for Arya’s revenge plot, there comes the tantalizing notion that any of her future victims on the show might return at some point.

No one expected to see David Bradley as Walder Frey again, and if Arya gets her hands on Cersei or some other familiar face, that bumped-off character might just enjoy a second life as a useful Arya disguise. Will it be Sansa? I doubt it. But that’s definitely what Arya was threatening when she flipped her dagger in the direction of her sister.

Spoilers for the fifth season of Game of Thrones follow: When last we saw Arya Stark in the fifth season finale of Game of Thrones, she was screaming her head off because her vision was rapidly disappearing. There’s been much speculation amongst fans of the show about whether the condition would be permanent, but Maisie Williams, the 18-year-old actor who plays Arya, already appears to have an answer. “Somebody on the street will go, ‘Oh, you’re going blind,'” she told EW, “And I wanted to keep them guessing. Whose faces were in aryas bag?

On Game of Thrones’ latest episode, who was in Arya’s bag of faces? Spoilers ahead for Game of Thrones season 7, episode 6, “Beyond the Wall” Thanks to Littlefinger’s manipulations, Arya Stark is on poor terms with her sister Sansa in Game of Thrones ‘ latest episode.

Afraid that Arya might take back to the Northern lords, whose loyalties spin like weathervanes, Sansa tries to retrieve the note from Arya’s room, and instead discovers a bag with flattened faces. It seems like Arya’s building her own traveling House of Black and White, and making a collection of disguises for herself.

Sansa pulls out one young bearded man’s face, then another face that’s more identifiable as Walder Frey, whom Arya murdered in season 6. But who does the first face belong to? Looking at the different Freys Arya killed in season 6 and the start of season 7, there are several possibilities. It’s possible (although unlikely) that the face could belong to Ser Meryn Trant. Trant looks older than the face, but they do have similar facial hair. But in the season 5 finale, we saw Arya stab Trant in both eyes while killing him. This face looks uninjured, so that’s a point against it being Trant. Other face-candidates include any of Walder Frey’s sons, including Lothar Frey and Black Walder, whom Arya killed off-camera and baked into a pie to feed Walder before murdering him. Both these men had beards, and because Arya killed them, she presumably has their faces, although both also look too gaunt to be the unknown face. Meryn Trant pictured on the right. If it isn’t one of Arya’s kills that we’ve seen, it could be a face she stole from the House of Black and White, or a kill that happened off-camera during her journey from Braavos to Westeros.
